Tetsuya Chiba, manga artist, has died at 87

Tetsuya Chiba, the Japanese manga artist who created the boxing series Ashita no Joe, died last Thursday in a Tokyo hospital at the age of 87, his publisher Kodansha announced. Born in Tokyo in 1939, he spent his early childhood in northeastern China, where his family survived the end of the war hidden in an attic, and he drew pictures there for his three younger brothers. He began drawing manga in 1956 and went on to tell many stories about young people striving in sport, as well as stories drawn from his own memories of war. Please pray for his family and all who loved him as they grieve.
